If you’ve ever gone to a farmer’s market, you know that whole foods need little interference to taste delicious. Perhaps you were seduced by the aromas of real tomatoes and fresh basil, or rushed home to steam or grill fresh corn until it caramelized slightly. Voila, you’re a gourmet cook.
But the food industry sees your groceries — and your cooking — as woefully inadequate, in need of its “expertise.” The food industry uses 2,000 different food additives and spends billions of dollars to transform livestock and produce into processed food products that retain only a shred of their original nutrition.
What’s in Processed Food?
Did you know that if you’re eating the standard American diet, you’re consuming 150 pounds of nonfood additives per year? A whopping 130 pounds of that stuff is sugar. The next 10 to 15 pounds are salt. The remaining 5 to 10 pounds are fake flavorings, preservatives, food dyes, and artificial vitamins.
The 130 pounds of sugar is bad enough, given sugar’s direct correlations with diabetes, inflammation, and cancer. But on top of that, think about the last time you picked up a 10-pound weight. Then imagine that weight is pure salt. Or that it’s made up of chemical additives. These chemicals lodge in your body, confuse your enzymes, abrade your digestive tract, and pollute your liver, kidneys, tissues, and blood. No wonder so many Americans are so tired, low, obese, sick.
Changing Foodways, Changing Health
Once upon a time — not so long ago — we ate from the garden and from the wild. Humans ate that way for thousands of years. Diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and obesity were rare.
Now most Americans eat processed food crammed with chemicals and additives. We eat animal products laden with antibiotics and hormones. And our health is suffering. For example:
1. Diabetes kills more than 230,000 Americans per year.
2. Cancer kills 565,000 Americans per year.
3. Heart disease kills 80,000 Americans per year.
4. Every hour, 13 Americans die from obesity-related diseases.
“Frenemies” in Your Kitchen
And yet the food processing industry insists that it is absolutely crucial to your well-being and comfort.
The truth is, the food industry needs you way more than you need it. It needs you to buy its products each week in grocery stores, to feed its products to your family and friends, and to get addicted to its artificially appealing, multimillion-dollar flavors. When you do so, you pay the food industry’s bills and justify its existence.
You don’t need the food industry. You need whole, healthful food. To protect your health and the health of your loved ones, think of processed food as poison.
